Stress urinary incontinence is a common condition affecting nearly 1 in 3 women (Luber, 2004). The tension-free vaginal tape is a minimally invasive procedure that has become the gold standard surgical treatment for women with stress incontinence when conservative management is insufficient to control symptoms. Although complications seldom occur and many are minor, some can significantly affect a persons life. Given the recent class action lawsuits regarding vaginally inserted mesh, it is important for clinicians to have extensive understanding of pelvic anatomy and procedures such as the tension-free vaginal tape.
